Skipping Stone Farm

Skipping Stone Farm is a small family farm in Utica, Ohio.

Our Business

We started raising grass-fed beef for ourselves because we didn't like what we were getting from the grocery store, and we didn't like how it was being produced.  Commercial beef is produced in large, crowded feedlots.  The cattle are force-fed lots of corn. (It takes a lot of fossil fuel and chemical inputs to raise feed corn, ya know?) 

We started raising grass-fed beef in 1995, mostly for ourselves and for our family and friends.  The business has grown by word of mouth, and we currently process anywhere from 2 to 5 beeves per year.

Raising cattle on grass works with the cow's natural digestive system, and it builds top soil instead of destroying it.  We don't use any synthetic herbicides or fertilizers, so our pastures provide habitat for many different kinds of wildlife, in addition to our cattle.

We sell directly to you, the consumers, which eliminates the middle-man.  This saves you money on a high quality product.

Who We Are

Kathy Harrison, Owner/Operator

Kathy has liked cows ever since she was little.  When she discovered Belted Galloway cattle during her college years, she had a crazy dream of raising some Beltie cows and crossing them with other breeds to see what would happen.  The result is the current Skipping Stone Farm herd.  She is an organic chemist by training, but an organic farmer by calling.  Her idea is to understand the chemistry in order to do things the natural way.  She's just crazy about Rich, too!

Rich Harrison, Husband

Rich is a city boy who likes everything outdoorsy.  He likes to live healthy and eat healthy.  He believes that trees are the solution to global climate change, so go plant one today!  He's in love with the women of Skipping Stone Farm!

Zephyr Harrison, Farm Hand Apprentice

Zephyr has taken on greater responsibilities, such as watering the cattle.  She enjoys helping with the tractor chores and wishes that the baby moos would not stare at her so much. 

Dandy, Indy, Sunny, and Lilly, Farm Dogs

Indy, Sunny, Dandy, and Lilly keep the critters in line, alert the People when someone visits, and keep the couch from spontaneously levitating.
