Gone But Not Forgotten

When you have a brood cow working hard for you for a decade, you tend to get attached.  This page is dedicated to all of the good old girls who have moved on to greener pastures.  We still miss you and we still look for you when we check the herd.

About the Cattle

Some cattle get to stay and be in the herd for a long time, others go quickly.  In the case of the long-timers, we have found that it's actually better for all concerned if they get to take one last trailer-ride to OVM, where they meet their end quickly and purposefully.  This was illustrated in harsh relief in the summer of 2013, when dear old Loiny went to OVM for freezer beef (a sad day indeed).  About a month later, Riblet was mortally injured in a breeding accident.  After trying to nurse her back to health for 4 days, it became apparent that she was not going to stand up again, and we had to have her euthanized.  Then it was time to rent a big backhoe and dig a big hole in the pasture to lay her to rest.  I would have rather that she'd had a quick ending and ended up in the freezer, than for her to have had such a drawn out death, and ended up in the ground.
